Chapter 10- Rhidian

A comfortable silence settled around the table as we ate and drank to our heart’s content. I didn’t know what kind of meals the fairies were used to, but me and my soldiers hadn’t eaten like this since before we entered the military. I felt like an animal as I ripped apart the ribs, the sauce coating my lips and teeth.

I glanced up at the sudden tap on my shoulder. “What?” I growled as I glared behind me to find the sorcerer still tapping my shoulder.

“Can I speak to you for a moment?"

I was loathe to put down my ribs and leave the table, but the man had done us a favor, however misguided it was. If it wasn’t for him, we probably would have been fighting each other, and who knows how many of us would have actually made it to the king’s palace.

“Fine.”

I followed him into the next room, which appeared to be an office and library. Old tomes lined the shelves along each wall, and an oak desk stood in the middle of the room scattered with papers. The old man closed the door behind us and turned to stare at me with his big blue eyes.

“You are the one we thought would never come,” he said.

I glanced down at my boots. “Um. Yeah, I guess. I’m a sun fairy, technically.”

“There’s no technically about it. You’re a sun fairy through and through.”

I scoffed. “Not really. I didn’t know I had powers until very recently.”

“The length of one’s knowledge means nothing compared to its depths.”

“Well, I don’t know much about my powers, either.”

“You fear them,” he stated.

“Of course, I fear them. I melted a man!” Bile rose in my throat as I thought about it, and I suddenly wanted nothing more than to escape this room and this conversation. But the old man remained in front of the door as if he knew what I was thinking.

“You fear that which you do not know.”

He was suddenly speaking more like a wise old wizard than a kooky hermit, and it was making me uncomfortable.

“Well, I guess I’ll always fear sun powers then, because I’m never going to get to know them. I’m never using them again.”

The man shook his head, disappointment dulling his eyes. “Don’t say that, young man.”

“Why not?” My voice escalated as my anger rose. “People keep telling me what I am and what I have to do, but no one can tell me anything. I decide who I am. I decide what to do with my life.”

“You are a military man. You have already sworn an oath to sacrifice your life for your kingdom. Does that not constitute using your powers?”

I opened my mouth to reply, but I didn’t know what to say. I’d never thought of it like that. But it seemed far easier to sacrifice my life for the kingdom than to use my horrible powers and accept my fairy heritage. I was willing to kill fairies to protect Verus, not melt humans.
